Mapping Mobility: Spatial and Class Change in the Gilded Age Wall Street Workforce

Meredith Waterbury

Meredith Waterbury joined Brown Bros. in 1904 and was still with the firm in 1910. In 1910, her salary was $1,352.

In 1900, she lived at 2209 7th Ave. in New York, N.Y. and was recorded as the spouse of the head of household, who was her husband Thomas Sherman Waterbury.

A 1905 state census lists Meredith and Sherman Waterbury living together with their two-year-old son Chester at 143 W. 140th Street, with the household also including a white American servant named Ester Cooper. Although at this point Meredith Waterbury was working at Brown Bros., no occupation is given for her.

In 1910, Meredith Waterbury lived at 2509 7th Ave. in New York, N.Y. and was recorded as the head of household. In that year, the household consisted of Meredith and Chester Waterbury. While Meredith Waterbury was described as "widowed," in fact Sherman Waterbury was living at 143 West 140th Street, by himself. The couple had evidently separated but Meredith Waterbury did not wish to acknowledge this.
